Clinic Services
Community Legal Assistance Sarnia is part of a network of 79 provincial legal clinics funded by
Legal Aid Ontario. The mandate of the clinic is to provide legal services to the low-income
residents of Sarnia and the surrounding area. Our lawyers work to make justice more
accessible. We do this through:

General Advice
Client Representation
Public Legal Education
Law Reform
Community Activities.

WHAT WE DO
Legal Advice
We provide free legal advice in a number of legal areas to low income persons who meet our eligibility criteria.

We work in the following legal areas:

Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
Canada Pension Plan Disability
Criminal Injuries Compensation
Employment Law
Human Rights
Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
Old Age Security
Tenant LAw
Legal Aid Appeals

We do not work in the areas of criminal law or family law. For assistance with these matters you must apply for a legal aid certificate and hire a private bar lawyer.

If your question is a straightforward one we may be able to help you over the phone. If it is a
more complicated legal matter we will schedule an appointment for you to meet with one of our
staff. In addition to providing legal advice, our staff may be able to represent you at a hearing.
We represent people at hearings before a number of tribunals including:

Social Benefits Tribunal (Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program),
Canada Pension Disability Appeals
Criminal Injuries Compensation Hearings
Board of Referees and Umpire (employment insurance appeals)

We also appear in appeal courts for these matters.

Public Legal Education
To make our clients aware of their legal rights and obligations, we offer workshops and training sessions on a variety of legal topics. Workshops and training sessions can be tailored
to meet the specific needs of your group. We also have a wide range of free
pamphlets and other legal information available at our office.

Visit the
Legal Resource section of this web site.

Law Reform
Law reform allows the Clinic to work with other groups to improve the situation of clients who
tend not to be represented in the regular political process. One of the ways we do this is to
lobby the various levels of government for changes to laws affecting low income individuals.
We will also meet with government departments to improve their service delivery to poor and
disadvantaged groups.

Community Development
We help to empower individuals and groups by helping them organize to enforce their legal
rights. For instance, we might help a group of tenants form a tenants association to address
repair or rent issues.
